The dictionary meaning of democracy is the belief in freedom and equality between people, or a system of government based on this belief, in which power is either held by elected representatives or directly by the people themselves.
On the other hand what does anarchy mean? According to the dictionary, it means a situation of confusion and wild behaviour in which the people in a country, group, organization, etc., are not controlled by rules or laws.
As we go to the poll we need to think of what is it that we want in our country. Yes there are many needs and yes there is corruption rife in every sector of our country, as also elsewhere.
How do we exercise our vote to eliminate corruption on the one hand and establish a law abiding democratic governance on the other.
Laws are made by the parliament. There is supposed to be wide consultation when making the law. People are given an opportunity to make their comments.
As the community we have three responsibilities, 1. That we choose a leadership in whom we have confidence. Look at their track record see what they have done to prove what they say. Research and find out who the person is and what they have done to justify their leadership. Make an informed choice.
Participate in law and policy making by the government. Voting is not the end of responsibility in a democracy. If we want government of the people then we have to be active in making our comments and our voices heard when laws and policies and budgets are being drawn up.
When we vote for a party, we also need to look at their track record. Have they been constructive; have they in any way helped to change our lives; have they upheld democratic principles and are they capable of delivering are some of the questions we should ask before we place our crosses next to a party.
Lets learn about them and contribute to them but in the next elections lets vote with information and in a considered manner.
